Bringing the Parties to the Table: Simulating a Middle East Peace Summit
"There has been enough destruction, enough death, enough waste. And it's time that together we occupy a place beyond ourselves, our peoples, that is worthy of . . .the descendants of the children of Abraham."King Hussein of Jordan (Oct 1998)

    Overview:
For well over fifty years, the state of Israel has seen conflict. It is a complicated conflict over land, religion, resources, human rights, political freedom, security, and national identity. The triumph of the establishment of the Jewish homeland, seen by much of the world as an inspiring achievement, is seen by the Arab world as the dispossession of an indigenous people. Arguments over the ownership of the Holy Land of Jews and Christians and Muslims, and the status and treatment of Palestinians, have been the cause of wars in 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1982, as well as recent activity in the 2000s.Though the world has watched the efforts toward peace over the past twenty years, Israel today is the site of new waves of violent uprisings, with each side blaming the other for the violence. The parties are once again at the table attempting to reach a final two-state solution. Is lasting peace possible between Israel's Jews and the Palestinian people? Can Prime Minister Netanyahu unite Israel's people and its divided Parliament? Can Palestinian leaders unite the many factions within their own people? Is it possible for two peoples--with diverse opinions, values, and characters--to share the land to which they both lay claim? What role will the pressure from surrounding nations and outside groups, some terroristic, play? What compromises and concessions must be made to assure a stable future?

After selecting a role, begin to complete the research organizer from your assigned perspective. Using articles and speeches your character has given in real life, gather quotes and paraphrased statements about their individual beliefs surrounding key issues at the heart of the conflict. This will give you a well-rounded idea of where your character stands in the debate.

The UN Secretary General and his team are responsible for developing a resolution which incorporates the major concessions they believe integral to Middle East peace.
Peace Conference Simulation Day 1 - Presentation of Speeches Tuesday class/Wednesday (depending)
You must come dressed to represent your role. Since it is A block, be prepared to begin at the bell. You may read from your speech, but be loud, proud, assertive, and character appropriate! During the talks, you will be responsible for listening to the presentations of all parties, taking notes (the organizer will be collected), and for responding to the remarks of the other parties in an open panel discussion.
Following the talks you will review the proposed resolutions and we will create a speakers list for Day 2 discussions. Seek 2-3 parties to speak in favor of your resolution. Look for 2-3 resolutions that you would support. It is often a give and take process, but make sure your character would support all parts of the resolution.
    Day 1 Homework: Tuesday night
Put together note cards with direct quotes or statements you’ve made that address each of the major issues being presented in resolutions you’ve signed up to speak for or against. You need evidence to support your arguments (either pro or con) during Day 2 discussions.
Peace Conference Simulation Day 2 – Open Discussion Wednesday class
Again, you must come dressed to represent your role. Be prepared to present your resolution in the UN open forum led by Ban Ki-Moon. We will hear arguments from those who signed up on the speakers list, both pro and con, and then we will have time to amend or change proposed resolutions. Then you will evaluate which resolutions you could/would support and cast votes. Be prepared to defend the resolutions you have signed and attack those you are against. We will close the day with a debriefing.

    Step 1: Preparation/Research**
Be prepared to answer these Essential Questions from your assigned perspective before you come to the table! (You may want to print this organizerto help you record your notes.)

Remember to cite your sources whenever you make an important point or quote. Attempt to integrate quotes you find while researching.
Your final speech must be posted to turnitin.com!
